It all STARTED Over 10 YEARS and 10,000 miles ago…

when I moved to New York City.  As a guy of a certain age I fight the endless fight to stay healthy and in shape.  And still eat ice cream.   Treadmills and gyms didn’t have staying power for me.  And the magic of New York City was pulling me to discover more about the people, places, and things that make this place unique.

Originally started in 2010 by timidly running short routes along the East River and Hudson River while still pounding the treadmill.  In 2011 inspired by the 200th anniversary of the Manhattan street grid I wondered if I could run every street in Manhattan in a year. That curiosity matched my growing desire to learn more about my adopted city, and the city I serve professionally, through first-hand experience.  So, a project was born and I managed to run every street, avenue, road, drive, place, alley, lane, mews, landing, terrace, row, and plain old Broadway in Manhattan.

It turned out to be one of the most exciting and rewarding activities in my life and encouraged me to learn more about NYC through running challenges and goals.

RunEveryStreet chronicles my experience exploring New York City by running its streets.  Every year I create a different project to motivate me to do my miles and explore the greatest city in the world.

My 2018 project – One Hundred 10Ks for NYC – is designed to document accessible and interesting running routes through NYC neighborhoods and areas of interests while experiencing the variety and diversity of New York City.   It builds on previous projects and will hopefully include recommendations from other runners. Each run is a 10K but can serve others as a starter, a 5K or foundation for longer outings.

Hope you enjoy it.  And if you have a favorite running route you’d like to share please do so.

A recap by year with some additional context is provided below. And pictures. Plenty of pictures along the way though I confess most are recent as it took me a couple of years and a few iPhone upgrades to become proficient in merging running and photography.
